Vegetation

Mt Rothwell is a partially cleared former grazing property that has retained remnant plains grassland, herb rich grassy woodland and granitic hills habitats. Since 2000 the property has been actively managed to restore and enhance its biodiversity values.

Plains Grassland is listed as endangered within the Victorian Volcanic Plains Bioregion. Recent survey work has identified approximately 10 species of Austrodanthonia, 14 species of Stipa and 10 Poa species. The major threat to biodiversity values on the site is from weed infestation. Mt Rothwell has a team of skilled staff and volunteers dedicated to the ongoing eradication of high threat weeds. This is an integrated weed management program that promotes the establishment of native species that have the ability to out compete weed species.  Seven years of active weed management was recognised by the Victorian Department of Primary Industries by the “2007 Victorian Weedbuster Awards – Winner – Private Land Category”.

Weed management is guided by a mapping and monitoring program that has been recently established for high priority weed and native species.
